Shared hosting and the reality of 33 pence delivery, 400 pounds advertising

I have been in the process of putting together a few words on shared hosting, and where it fits these days. In fact, I think it is going to end up as a number of articles. I need to put my thoughts into words simply to let it out... a cathartic process... as my keys take the brunt of my frustration.

"Right tool for the job" is what I hear in my head.

"But I can do it for a fraction of the cost" is what they hear in theirs.

Lets talk about a 'fictitious entity' - they are not alone - and they run their business from an online shop.

They have possibly downgraded from a dedicated server to shared hosting. They are not in the time honoured school of "I have let my developer go, so I do not understand what you are asking (uncomfortable pause)" - they are oh so very "we have a team of developers in house - however they are confused as to why this works locally, but not there".

They have issues with shared hosting as it is slowing down their delivery, it seems to have slower response times, and sometimes (often) they run into problems as their resource consumption is throttled.

Google Ad Words - are they worth it? No. Not in my opinion. Everyone loses except Google. It is a bidding war with limited return and once you are hooked, you talk yourself into worrying how life would look if you turned them off.

However - this fictitious example is spending almost £400 A DAY on ad-words, yet struggles on with daily complaints with shared hosting at 30p per day.

How does that make sense?

When I was a child I used to have two sets of Mole Grips. I didn’t have the funds for a socket set, spanners, or torque wrench. I was winging it. I appreciate - albeit through a learning experience that sure - Mole Grips fit everything.... but round nuts suck, and there are such things as "tools for the job". Equally - you could run a courier operation from public transport too... but would you? Apparently so.

With this in mind - would you not be better off out-laying on service delivery so that any advertising you do pays off and you have more control over your primary revenue stream?

This comes with the heavy caveat of being an engineer not a businessman - but really? REALLY? This is one of many MANY 'fictitious' examples.
