CentOS7 now booting on Xen

The fallout from Spectre and Meltdown continue to plague me ... us... all.

Today saw a group of firmware / microcode updates available in yum for CentOS 7. These appear to now mean that it is possible to update and restart CentOS7 kernels running on Xen.

3.10.0-693.5.2.el7.centos.plus.x86_64 looks good at this point with the recent updates.

...appears good to go now. Up to this point, we have been advising AGAINST new kernels and reboot - as this results in it crashing after POST as the kernel goes live - and all the pain involved in getting grub to use a different kernel.

Currently, those on Cloud Linux 7 may be better off holding-their-horses as this is still in the toilet.

At this time Cloud Linux (particularly fantastic and transparent reportage in one place there) timeline they are showing:

Update [Jan 18, 2018 9:20pm PT]

We have been running extensive tests for CL/CentOS/RHEL 7 patchset, and so far the only issue we found was with CPU hotplugging. This issue is fixed, and we have started next set of tests.

Which is all good. Happy days. Thank you smart people. For the rest of us it is hurry up and wait.

Tick. Tock.
